Moroccan ports recorded a positive trend in overall port traffic, which reached 241.2 million tons in 2024 compared with 209.4 million tons in 2023, an increase of 15.2%: Domestic traffic recorded a volume of 125.5 million tons, up 11.4%, while transshipment reached a volume of 115.6 million tons, up 19.5% on 2023.
The breakdown of overall port traffic in 2024 is marked by a predominance of transshipment activity, representing a share of 47.9%, followed by imports with 31.3%, exports with 16.9%, cabotage with 3.1%, and bunkering with 0.7%.
In terms of transshipment activity, the Tanger Med port complex confirmed its position as a major logistics platform in the Mediterranean basin, thanks to an increase in container transshipment volumes (112.6 million tons/+21.3% equivalent to 9.6 million TEUs/+18.9%).
Imports for 2024 stood at 75.5 million tons, up 12.4% on 2023. This evolution is mainly explained by the variation in imports of: cereals (10.6 million tons/+14.5%), sulfur (8.2 million tons/+26%), hydrocarbons (12.9 million tons/+8.3%) and coal (9.6 million tons/-8.3%).
Export volumes rose by 13.3% in 2024, reaching 40.8 million tons. This variation is due to growth in exports of fertilizers (12.1 million tons/+10.1%), raw phosphate (6.5 million tons/+48.4%), sulfuric acid (2 million tons/+151.9%) and phosphoric acid (3.4 million tons/+32.2%).
As for cabotage, trade between Moroccan ports fell by 5% compared with 2023, recording a volume of 7.5 million tons in 2024, mainly as a result of the drop in cabotage for hydrocarbons (-44.4%). Bunkering has risen by 5.6% compared with 2023, with a volume of 1.8 million tons, benefiting ships transiting the Strait of Gibraltar. Traffic in new vehicles rose by 4.5% in 2024, with a volume of 703,678 units, of which around 77% were destined for export.
